Pending a vote by the church on April 23rd (update: It passed nearly unanamously), the Journey Students will have a new home base. If approved, we are calling it “Hangar 40” (or “The Hangar” as its already been dubbed). The idea is entrenched in Isaiah 40:28-31 which talks about God as our strength and that even when we fall he gives us wings to soar because our hope is in Him. A hangar prepares an aircraft for flight and this is what we envision for this facility when it comes to students. We truly believe many will look back later in life and say, “My faith really took flight in THAT place!”
This building will afford us many opportunities:
- Lots of play space, hang space and relationship building space (this is HUGE!)
- More flexibility in our approach to student ministry programming
- Security in having everyone together in one place
- A sense of ownership for the students that this is their space
- A visual to these students and to the community that FBC Lavonia loves teenagers
- Space to GROW!
Once approved, we plan on breaking ground quickly in order to be able to occupy the space somewhere around the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year (late August-early September).
Update: Ground clearing began today (June 13th). Expected completion sometime late October. We are behind the schedule we originally desired, but the plans changed and we are building a bigger building than we first anticipated.
UPDATE: Completion by the contractor now appears to be somewhere in the mid-October range. Today (August 23) the slab work has begun.
UPDATE: Our hopeful date for having our first FUEL of the year in the new building is set for January 10th. Please be patient as that date may slide a little while we wait on some critical items to be finished.
UPDATE: The building committee has approval to finish the whole building! We are in that process now and are expecting to have an Open House and parent meeting in the Hangar on Sunday March 4th at 12pm after the morning service. There will be a lunch provided for all in attendance.
